It started with a phone call that changed everything.
The $16,000 Wake-Up Call
A family trucking company’s story
A small trucking company — 12 drivers, a family-run operation built over 20 years — had just been hit with a $16,000 FMCSA fine. One driver had been on the road for three weeks with an expired CDL medical card. Nobody knew. They tracked everything in a shared spreadsheet, and somewhere between a busy Monday and a missed email, the expiration slipped through.
The fine nearly broke them. They had to delay payroll. Two drivers almost quit. The owner — a man who’d built his business from a single truck — said: “I thought I was on top of everything. I let my people down.”
A foreman in Texas kept OSHA certs in a filing cabinet. When an inspector showed up, he spent 45 minutes digging through folders. Fine: $14,000 — money meant for a new crew truck.
A clinic manager juggled 30 nurses’ licenses in Excel and phone reminders. One BLS cert lapsed for 11 days. The clinic nearly lost its accreditation. She said: “I stay up at night worrying about what I might have missed.”
A restaurant owner’s two food handler permits expired. The establishment was shut down for 3 days. Loyal customers who saw the “closed” sign never came back. “Nobody told me.”
